Initially, WCS was danced to swing, jazz, blues and country music. Now, WCS has adapted to be danced to a wide variety of musical genres: pop, hip hop, RnB, acoustic, folk, funk, electro, and so on. In international competitions, DJs still tend to use the traditional broad categories of blues and contemporary, as well as fast and slow. WCS is usually danced at slow to moderate tempi, i.e. between around 60 BPM and 120 BPM. In the past (1950s to 2000s), WCS was danced to much faster music, up to around 140 BPM.
